Our Diversity & Inclusion Mission

At Affirm, we believe every person has equal value, which is why we work so hard to expand fair and transparent access to credit and to welcome every kind of person and idea.

Our Diversity & Inclusion Council combats discrimination and promotes respect, inclusion, opportunity, and community in our workplace.

We ensure inclusive messaging practices as well as maintain and publish up-to-date employee demographic metrics. We also partner with leadership to set goals on companywide hiring efforts.

Messaging & Metrics

We source diverse candidates from varied backgrounds and create fair hiring processes and goals that reduce bias in order to provide all candidates equal opportunity to demonstrate their capacity and abilities.

Attraction & Recruitment

We raise awareness of identity in the workplace and cultivate an inclusive community at Affirm.

Inclusion & Retention

We engage lower-income communities and underrepresented groups through financial education.

Community Partnerships

What we’ve done

Our Diversity & Inclusion Council has been working hard to make progress towards our initiatives and goals. Below are just a few of our accomplishments:

Advising on diversity objectives

Our ERG leads work to advise internal stakeholders on areas of inclusion and belonging. They help craft the right types of questions to ask on company-wide surveys, identify areas around the office that can be made more inclusive, and act as mouthpieces for their respective communities to bring new ideas to the table.

Facilitating important conversations

In 2018, we were excited to partner with our Employee Resource Groups and Diversity & Inclusion Council to bring together a number of events for our community.

Our D&I Council hosted an impactful panel on “The Power and Value of Employee Resource Groups,” and our LGBTQ+ ERG coordinated a series on gender identity in the workplace. Additionally, our Women@ ERG hosted a timely discussion on #MeToo and its impact in and out of the workplace.

Connecting with our community

Our Community Partnerships team came together to host a group from Covenant House, an organization that helps transitional youth who are under-housed and under-resourced. We had Affirmers share stories about their own personal struggles and upbringing as a way to provide hope and support to these young adults.

In December, members of our BLACK@ ERG participated in the Hidden Genius Project: Brothers Code Community Expo at Merritt College in Oakland. The expo helps young men of color in middle and high school build networks and skill sets that will guide them to exciting opportunities within the tech sector.

Maintaining a supportive workplace

We began 2018 with five ERGs and ended the year with 13. Our resource groups now span the gamut from race and ethnicity to sex and gender, sexual orientation, and parental and veteran status. We’re proud of the work our D&I council and ERG members have done to foster a workplace culture that supports the needs of a diverse community.

Diversity matters to us

We view Diversity & Inclusion as a core area of success and will continue to share progress and updates on our initiatives. This is only our first report and the beginning of a long journey ahead. At Affirm, people come first and we hope to create a work environment that is completely open, inclusive, and welcoming.
